Summary of Collective Farm
A communal farm on which the land and heavy machinery are owned by the state, but the other means of production are owned by the participating farmers. Often the member families cultivate a private plot on the farm in addition to the communal plot. Management of the farm is ostensibly controlled by the farmers, usually under a state-defined plan or quota objective. Collective farms are common in the Soviet Union and account for 90 percent of the agricultural output of that country. Collective farming is applied widely in most socialist countries, and in Israel.
