Latin American Economic System Outline
SELA was established in 1975 for Latin American states only. It is a permanent advisory organization for promoting cooperation between members or between members and non-members. Due to the nature of the organization, it only plays a role at policy level, in particular in assisting the coordination of the members' economic policies.(1)

Introduction to Latin American Economic System
Latin American Economic System, officially known by its Spanish name Sistema Económico Latinoamericano (SELA), an organization founded in 1975 to promote cooperation between the countries of Latin America and to accelerate economic and social development within these countries. SELA also seeks to strengthen the participation of Latin American nations within international economic negotiations
. In the early 1990s it represented its 27 member countries in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) negotiations
. In 1994 these negotiations led to a new global agreement abolishing restrictions on trade and establishing the World Trade Organization.
SELA's policy-making body is the Latin American Council, which has one representative from each member nation and meets annually. Action committees, acting in the interests of three or more countries, are set up to achieve specific joint objectives. These include creating multinational enterprises; promoting regional production and supply policies, especially in agriculture, energy, and commodities; helping to channel financial resources towards priority projects; facilitating cooperation in the areas of transport, communications, tourism, and environment; and encouraging research and the exchange of scientific and technical information. Depending on their degree of success, action committees are either dissolved or become permanent bodies. The main administrative body of SELA is the secretariat, based in Caracas, Venezuela." (1)
