Technology Transfer and International Trade Economy
In relation to international trade economy, Christopher Mark (1993) provided the following definition of Technology Transfer: The diffusion of practical knowledge from one enterprise, institution or country to another. Technology may be transferred by giving it away (e.g., through technical journals or conferences); by theft (e.g., industrial espionage); or by commercial transactions (e.g., patents for industrial processes) as well as through cross-national exchanges among components of multinational enterprises. The transfer of technology may be accompanied by transfer of legal rights to use of the technology, such as sale of licensing of associated intellectual property rights ( Sec .I ). BothUNCTAD and OECD (Sec. III) have been active in discussing regulation of international technology transfers.
Technology Transfer in International Trade
Meaning of Technology Transfer, according to the Dictionary of International Trade (Global Negotiator): The movement of scientific methods of production or distribution from one enterprise, institution or country to another, as through foreign investment, international trade, licensing of patents rights, technical assistance or training. The process to commercially exploit research varies widely. It can involve licensing agreements or setting up joint ventures and partnerships to share both the risks and rewards of bringing new technologies to market. Other corporate vehicles, e.g. spin-outs, are used where the host organization does not have the necessary resources or skills to develop a new technology
. In international markets, usually, is transmitted through International Technology Transfer Agreements.
